Govilon Year 8 Residential 2025

Govilon Year 8 Residential

In April, sixteen of our year 8 students had an exciting and enriching experience during their four day residential to the Govilon Activity Centre in Wales.

Kettering Old Grammar School Foundation, as kindly gave us a grant of £1250, to pay for a coach, in order to lower the cost of the experience and make the residential more accessible for all our families. The trip was planned to provide the students with new adventures, learning opportunities, and the chance to develop important social and independent living skills.

A key highlight was some of the students' first-ever experience of going into the sea and being on the beach. They explored the shoreline, learning about the marine environment and enjoying the water. Playing on the beach allowed them to relax, have fun, and build confidence in a natural setting. There was no pressure for them to join in with any of the activities on offer, and they were free to play as they wanted to. Some flew kites and built sandcastles and a moat to try to trap the sea and others just enjoyed paddling.

In addition to the beach activities, the students explored the Dan yr Ogof cave system, where they discovered fascinating geological formations and learnt about the area's natural history. Another highlight of the four days was gorge walking in the Brecon Beacons, students had to work together to get through the river water and over the rocks.

The trip also included a fun session of bowling, which provided opportunities for students to practise their co-ordination and social skills while enjoying friendly competition with their peers. There was even time for a quick stop at the best icecream shop in the UK!

The Govilon Centre team were incredibly supportive throughout the trip, especially in accommodating all the students' special education needs. The staff went above and beyond by hiring a beach wheelchair, which made the beach accessible for everyone, ensuring that all students could participate fully in the activities and enjoy the seaside experience.

Throughout the trip, students gained valuable social skills by working together, communicating effectively, and supporting one another. They also developed greater independence by managing their belongings, following safety instructions, and navigating new environments.

Overall, the trip to the Govilon Centre was a memorable and educational experience that supported all students' needs and helped them grow in confidence, independence, and social interaction. We look forward to more adventures that inspire learning and personal development next year!
